The IB Diploma Programme Profile - Diploma Program-A Basis for Practice-IBO
The Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is a demanding
pre-university course of study that leads to examinations; it is designed for highly motivated
secondary school students aged 16 to 19. The programme incorporates the best elements of
national systems without being based on any one. The IBO's goal is to provide students with
the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment, make wise choices,
and respect others in the global community. In the 30 years since its founding, the IB diploma
has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. The student who satisfies
its demands demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of
subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a
competitive world. Colleges and universities do well to encourage the enrollment of these able
young scholars.
The Curriculum
The Diploma Programme curriculum consists of six subject groups:
Group 1: Language A1 - English A1
HL
Group 2: Second Language - French B
SL
Group 3: Individuals and
Societies - European History HL/SL or Economics HL/SL
Group 4: Experimental Sciences -
Biology HL/SL, Chemistry HL/SL, Physics SL
Group 5: Mathematics - Mathematics
SL
Group 6: The Arts - Visual Arts
SL, Music SL, Theatre Arts SL
- if enough demand or *can be substituted for a second SL Group 4 or a
second SL Group 3*
At Bayview we offer a Preparatory course of studies in Grades 9
and 10 in order to fully prepare potential IB candidates for the Diploma
Programme in grades 11 and 12. Students study an enriched curriculum in
the core subjects of English, French, Mathematics, Science and History.
Those that are successful may then apply for the IB Diploma program.

Results are available in mid-July for May examination session candidates, and mid-January for
November examination session candidates. If requested, an official transcript of results will be
sent to universities. The transcript will indicate the level of the subjects, the grade awarded
in each, the total point score and the completion of the additional diploma requirements. It is
typically marked diploma awarded or certificate awarded. The bilingual diploma awarded indicates
that the candidate has offered two languages A1, or has offered a language A1 and a language A2,
or has taken an examination in at least one subject from group 3 or group 4 in a language other
than his or her language A1.
Authorization and Recognition
Only schools officially authorized by the IBO may offer the Diploma Programme and present
candidates for examination. There are over 1,400 participating schools in more than 110
countries. Of these, about one-third are located in the United States, Canada or the Caribbean,
and one-third in the Africa/Europe/Middle East region.
The IBO has shown that students are well prepared for university work and the Diploma Programme
has earned a reputation for rigorous assessment, giving IB diploma holders access to the world's
leading universities. These include institutions such as Cambridge, Harvard, Heidelberg, McGill,
MIT, Oxford, Princeton, Rotterdam Erasmus, Sorbonne, UBC and Yale.
The IBO is based in Geneva, Switzerland, with regional offices in Geneva, New York, Buenos Aires
and Singapore. The curriculum and assessment centre, located in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom,
oversees two examination sessions per year. The May session serves the majority of candidates,
who are from schools in the northern hemisphere; the November session caters for schools in the
southern hemisphere. Over 5,000 examiners worldwide, under the supervision of chief examiners
renowned in their fields, are involved in the assessment of candidate work.

The IB visit was conducted on February 17 and 18, 2003!! I am proud to announce that Bayview
has officially been accepted as an IB World School with our first Grade 11 class beginning in
September 2004!
We have finished the application phase of achieving the International
Baccalaureate charter at Bayview Secondary School. This is a multi-stage process. In the meantime, we have accepted
students into an 'enrichment' programme in Grades 9 and 10 in preparation for the IB Diploma
Programme that will impact successful IB candidates in their final two years of high school
(Grades 11 and 12).
'World Vision 30 Hour Famine' - Congratulations to some of our students for
participation in this very
worthwhile project. They raised over $2000! Good work Nika, Salva, Sandra, Ramya, Rehana
and Taslim. This Bayview tradition is continuing!!

Why IB at Bayview?
What does IB offer the student?
The Diploma Programme Curriculum
The programme has the strengths of a traditional and broad curriculum, but with
three important additional features, shown at the center of the hexagonal curriculum model below:
Emphasis at Bayview is placed on the IB Diploma and the critical internal three components:
The Diploma Program
The IBO Mission Statement - Education for Life
"Through comprehensive and balanced curricula coupled with challenging assessments, the
International Baccalaureate Organization aims to assist schools in their endeavors to develop
the individual talents of young people and teach them to relate the experience of the classroom
to the realities of the world outside. Beyond intellectual rigor and high academic standards,
strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners
and informed participants in local and world affairs, conscious of the shared humanity that binds
all people together while respecting the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes for the
richness of life."

The Six Academic Subjects
These are studied concurrently and students are required to study both the humanities and the sciences. Diploma candidates must select one subject from each of the six groups, although a second subject from groups 1 to 5 may be substituted for group 6. At least three but not more than four are taken at higher level (HL), while the others are standard level (SL); HL courses represent a minimum of 240 teaching hours, SL courses cover 150 hours. Students are thus able to explore some subjects in depth and others more broadly, a deliberate compromise between the early specialization of some national systems and the breadth found in others. The science-orientated student is challenged to learn a foreign language and the natural linguist becomes familiar with laboratory procedures. The subjects are continually reviewed to meet contemporary needs.
Group 1 - Language A1 (English)
More than 80 languages have been offered for examination as part of the IBO's policy of encouraging students to maintain strong ties to their own cultures. Very good writing and oral skills and respect for the literary heritage of the studentıs first language are complemented by the international perspective given through world literature studies. Language A1 at Bayview will be English.
Group 2 - Second Language (French)
All diploma candidates are examined in a second language. Several options
accommodate students with a very high level of fluency, genuine second language learners with previous experience learning the language, and those who have studied French previously in our public and high school systems. The principal aim for the subjects in group 2 is to enable students to use the language in a range of contexts and for many purposes; the courses focus on written and spoken communication. The second language at Bayview is French.
Group 3 - Individuals and Societies
Subjects included in this group are: business and management, economics, geography, history, history of the Islamic world, information technology in a global society ( at SL only), philosophy, psychology and cultural anthropology.
Group 4 - Experimental Sciences
The subjects available in group 4 are: biology, chemistry, physics, environmental systems (SL), and design technology. Practical laboratory skills are developed and collaborative learning is encouraged through an interdisciplinary group project. Students develop an awareness of moral and ethical issues and a sense of social responsibility is fostered by examining local and global issues.
Group 5 - Mathematics and Computer Science
All candidates for a diploma are required to complete a mathematics course, and four options are available to cater for different abilities and levels of student interest. Each course aims to deepen a studentıs understanding of mathematics as a discipline and to promote confidence and facility in the use of mathematical language. Computer science is an elective subject in group 5: it is not compulsory for diploma candidates
Group 6 - The Arts and Electives
Music, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts.
IBO Virtual Gallery
This includes visual arts, music and theatre arts, with emphasis placed on practical production by the student and exploration of a range of creative work in a global context.
