International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is an alternative diploma offered at Bayview Secondary School (BSS) designed for students age 16 to 19 (Grades 11 and 12). Students enrolled in this program will receive both the Ontario Secondary School (OSS) Diploma and the IB Diploma – which is recognized worldwide as a demanding pre-university course of study. The goal of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is to provide students with the values and opportunities that will enable them to develop sound judgment, make wise choices, and respect others in the global community. In the 30 years since its founding, the IB diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise. The student who satisfies its demands demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in a competitive world. Colleges and universities do well to encourage the enrollment of these able young scholars.

Students in the IB program are required to complete courses in 6 different areas – English, French, Mathematics, Science, History and Arts, and write a series of standardized examinations which are evaluated externally. In addition, students are required to complete a 4000 word extended research essay (EE), 150 hours of community involvement (Creativity-Action-Service) and a Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course in critical thinking before graduation.

To prepare students for the IB diploma program, Bayview have implemented an enrichment (Grades 9 and 10) program to support students intending to apply to the IB program in their grade 11 year.

Students interested to enrol in this enrichment program are required to apply directly to BSS in November of their Grade 8 year. Successful applicants will be transferred from their home high school to BSS for September of their Grade 9 year.
